Some of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Sarasota are located north of the downtown arts and culture district, close to where the Tamiami Trail comes closer to the Sarasota Bay and just north of the John Ringling Causeway that connects Florida with the barrier islands of the Sarasota Keys. This is where the elegant gated communities of Whitaker’s Landing and Tocobaga Bay can be found.

The communities are named after a prominent Sarasota developer and the Native American tribe that once lived in the area. Whitaker’s Landing lies along the shores of Whitaker Bayou, which connects neighbors with the Gulf of Mexico. Many of the homes at Whitaker’s Landing have incredible waterfront views, and all residents have dock access. Only two of the Tocobaga Bay properties have dock access and waterfront vistas.

The architecture in both neighborhoods is spectacular and very upscale. Even the smallest homes are grandiose. A four-bedroom and four-bathroom Mediterranean-style home starts at $850K. Many of the homes are split-level luxury estates that feature multiple balconies to enjoy the different views of the Sarasota Bay and the barrier islands, as well as skylights, private swimming pools, terraces, and more. At the higher end, house hunters will find the waterfront five-bedroom Spanish-style homes priced at $3 million.

Like with other luxury real estate markets in the Sunshine State, Whitaker’s Landing and Tocobaga Bay weathered the housing downturn better than most other neighborhoods. A major selling point of these neighborhoods is their proximity to downtown Sarasota and the sheer natural beauty of Whitaker Bayou. Both neighborhoods are ideal for boating and fishing enthusiasts, but lovers of the arts and cultural activities can simply walk to the performing arts centers and museums nearby. Some of Sarasota’s most elegant parks are also within walking distance.

The public schools serving the communities include Emma E. Booker Elementary, Booker Middle and Booker High, but parents will also find that a number of prestigious private schools and academies in the vicinity.
