After more than a decade of planning and millions of dollars invested, the Bradenton Riverwalk project had its opening ceremony on Thursday, October 18th. The ceremony took place before sunset at the new Pavillion and Event Area, and it was a proud moment for city officials and Manatee County commissioners. Thousands of residents and visitors enjoyed music by the State College of Florida, refreshments, skateboarding, and more.
According to Wade Tatangelo of the Bradenton Herald, Mayor Wayne Poston was ecstatic at the ceremony. This is a dream that had been talked about since he took office in the year 2000. The Bradenton Riverwalk runs along the Manatee River for a mile and a half; it starts under the Green Bridge on the west side and ends at the Manatee Memorial Hospital on the east.
The new Riverwalk gives lucky Bradenton residents a lot of amenities, including:
- Skate Park
- Kayak Launch
- Fishing Pier
- Beach Volleyball
- Splash Fountain
- Shaded Areas
- Tidal Discovery Zone
- Rowing Area
- Outdoor Art Gallery
- Sound Sculptures
The first art exhibit is already in place. “Postcards from the Friendly City” is a historical exhibition of enlarged panels that chronicle the development of the community. Other events are already on the Riverwalk Agenda -Art Slam on November 8th and a Blues Festival on December 1st. The Riverwalk is ideal for many family activities, from tai chi and yoga to kite flying and picnics.
