Nokomis Real Estate is a Melting Pot of Architectural Styles

A small and thriving census-designated community in Sarasota County lies wedged between I-75, Venice and Sarasota.  This area, Nokomis, is a haven for reasonably priced waterfront estate owners with a passion for boating, golfing, hiking and cycling, and a love for waterways and the ‘Old Florida’ lifestyle.

Its name derives from a character from Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem ‘The Song of Hiawatha’.  Its origins are grounded in the completion of the railroad to Venice in 1911, an opportunity for the Chicago businesswoman Bertha Palmer to build a ranch on the estate.  Later, Dr. Fred Albee sought to develop Venice and southern Nokomis.  Little by little, a seaside community comprising Shackett, Fox and Salt creeks, Dona, Roberts, Blackburn and Lyons bays, flourished into the bustling, upscale town people know today.

If not for the luxurious Casey Key, with its oldest public beach in Sarasota, its golf and beach resort, you could be fooled into believing Nokomis is nothing more than a small fishing village.  So charmingly rustic is its North Jetty Park fishing camp and delightfully laid-back are most of its dwellings and surroundings, that it couldn’t be held against you.  Yet, there is much more to Nokomis Real Estate than meets the eye.

From affordable housing in Sorrento to waterfront mansions valued upwards of $2 million, Nokomis is a melting pot of architectural styles, with plantation, Florida ranch, Mediterranean and modern home styles among the most popular ones.  Condominiums, maintenance free villas and townhouses are also available.

Once a retirement nook, Nokomis has been flooded with people who have dropped the median age to 44.4, some of whom are singles, others with young families or empty nesters.  They jumped at the chance to own a single-family home with access to fitness centers, swimming pools, clubhouses, picnic areas, and golf courses.  Occasionally, a Nokomis home may come with its own mangrove patch or pond, but it will certainly always come with more square footage than other Sarasota County housing markets would offer for the price.

Less than 10 minutes away from the Venice’s Municipal Airport and a stone’s throw away from the I-75 and Highway 41, Nokomis is by no means secluded.  What’s more, residents never have to travel too far for a shopping spree, due to the newly developed shopping districts built conveniently close to the residential area.

Ravishing natural surroundings coupled with the comforts and amenities that both the elite and the average Joe can appreciate, Nokomis is a place that anybody can call ‘home’.
